At some point we all get to a point where we feel stuck and have a hard time coming up with fresh creative ideas. In this article I will talk about 5 things that will boost your creative process and help you get out of the creative block. These 5 things are things that I already do on my creative routine. Some of them are just things I do as part of my workflow on a daily basis and I just realized they help me get more creative.
I will talk from the graphic design point of view because I create photo manipulations but it applies to pretty much any creative field.
1 – Create a Pinboard
Consulting a source of inspiration is almost a requirement whenever you start a new project of any kind. This is useful because it gives you an idea of what other people are doing. This is not to “steal ideas” but to get your mind working. It’s proven that watching other ideas or projects similar to what you want to do, will instantly make your mind work and you will have some starting point to explore your idea further.
Pinterest is one of my favorite places to look for inspiration and I think it’s the perfect place to start when it comes to boost your creative process. Pinterest’s algorithm to show you related images to what you are searching is just great.
Say you want to create a fantasy manipulation involving a dragon and you search for “fantasy dragon manipulation“. You find an image that you like and instantly Pinterest will show you dozens of great alternatives like this.
If you’re not in the design field, you can adapt this concept by bookmarking business ideas, articles, blogs or whatever you can find online and is relevant to your field.
2 – Listen to music that motivates you
It’s not about a particular genre of music, it’s about what you like, about what gets you moving and uplifts your mood.
Plato said “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”
The thing is that music evokes emotions and good emotions make you feel good and when you feel good your creativity rises. It doesn’t matter what kind of music you are listening as long as it’s the music that motivates you.
I usually listen while I’m Photoshopping and that keeps me motivated. Music will also help boost your creative process if you just listen to great music before you actually start working. On top of that you will be in a better mood during the day.
3 – Focus and eliminate distractions
Nowadays we are living in a world full of noise and instant updates, messages and notifications which often are not even important. If you want to really boost your creative process you must eliminate distractions and focus on your task. Turn of your phone or silence it, turn off notifications on social media while your working and let people around you know that this is your moment so that they don’t distract you while working.
4 – Clean and comfortable environment
Create a work environment that is comfortable and free of distractions. Decorate it with things that motivate you and if you’re bored with your office or desk just switch things around. For example turn the table to face another part of the room, add a flower on your desk or change the picture from your wall.
Keep your work area clean. If you’re working from your bedroom or from home in general, having food, toys and all sorts of unnecessary items can distract you and make you slowly lose your ideas and can even become frustrated.
Impose yourself a discipline and if you’no doing already, schedule your work time even if it’s just a hobby. Also, believe it or not, even the way you dress can have an impact on your mood and creativity, If you just get up of your bed and start working on pajamas you will be less creative. Getting dressed and ready to work changes your mindset and you mentally prepare for working.
5 – Get quality sleep
Reduce the exposure to blue light at least 2 hours before you go to sleep. Watching your phone before you go to sleep can cause sleep problems. Use blue filtering glasses or activate the night mode screen on your device if it has one which will make your screen more yellow.
Have a sleep routine. Going to bed and wake up at the same times every day will increase your sleep quality, health and will boost your creative process. Sleep quality is also affected by light and temperature. Make sure your bedroom is dark and the ideal temperature should be 60-67 Fahrenheit (ca. 19 °C) for optimal sleep.
